Business Toolbox ProEleven calculators for running a small business

Hourly Rate Calculator

Work out the hourly rate you need to charge to hit your income goal.

About this calculator

Work out the hourly rate a freelancer or small business must charge to reach an income goal after tax and expenses.

Formula

Rate = (Take-home goal ÷ (1 − tax rate) + expenses) ÷ billable hours per year.

Example

To take home 60,000 with 20% tax, 9,000 of expenses and 25 billable hours a week for 46 weeks, you need about 73 an hour.

Common questions

Why count only billable hours?

Admin, marketing and unpaid gaps take time you cannot invoice, so billable hours are far fewer than working hours.

Should I add a profit buffer?

Many freelancers add 10–20% for slow months. Increase expenses or the income goal to include it.
